Colorado Springs police said a body found inside a burning car early Tuesday downtown has an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The man, which has yet to be identified, was found at about 1 a.m. in a vacant lot near the intersection West Cimarron and Sahwatch streets after Colorado Springs firefighters extinguished the fire in the black Dodge sedan and “large amount of smoke in the vehicle,” police reports say.
A “suspicious device” thought to be an explosive was found in the car when police were searching for the origin of the gunshot, Police Department spokesman Lt. Howard Black said. The was tested in the lot by the department’s Bomb Squad
“It looks as though the device is improvised,” Black said. “At the end of the day, though, it may be found to be unexplosive.”
He continued, “These are difficult scenes of officers, first responders and people driving by the area…and if this turns out to be an explosive device, it could have been very dangerous for the first responders.”
The Police Department’s Violent Crimes Section has assumed control of the investigation.
Police said that there is no threat to the community.
