In a press release sent out on April 4th, 2018, Transit Mix Concrete Co. revealed their plans for a “world-class” bike park at the Pikeview Quarry location in Colorado Springs. Pikeview Quarry is located off of West Woodmen Road near Ute Valley, a popular outdoor recreation spot in the Pikes Peak region.

A process that started in 2017, the next phase will have the Mine Land Reclamation Board looking at Transit Mix’s application for a reclamation permit. This will happen on April 25th and 26th. If that permit is received, the next step will be applying for a special-use permit with El Paso County.

If both permits are received, Transit Mix will make Pikeview Quarry transferable to the City of Colorado Springs, which has shown interest in building a bike park on the spot in the past.

*Note: The press release mentions that accelerated plans to reclaim the Pikeview Quarry area on contingent on if Transit Mix receives permits for a quarry on the privately-owned Hitch Rack Ranch 10 miles southwest of Colorado Springs

Why Pikeview Quarry? Approximately 150 acres, it’s been determined that the space has several ideal characteristics that would make it a great spot for the project. Boasting 900 feet of vertical gain (or drop), it would allow for a variety of trails built for all skill levels. There’s also plenty of rock in the area, which can be used for special features around the park. A large building to be left behind by Transit Mix may also be used for an event space, rental shops, a concession area, and more. Additionally, the quarry’s proximity to the Pike National Forest will open the door for possible connections with other trails in the area.

According to the concept plan, a few of the features at the bike-park might include a pump park, a cycle cross course, a downhill jump track, a slopestyle jump zone, a bike polo field, a dog park, and an all-mountain perimeter trail.
