Colorado Parks and Wildlife recently tweeted out a video of a training technique that involves “hazing” a bear with a dog. This technique is mean to scare the bear, teaching the bear to stay away from homes.

As seen in the video, a bear that looks fairly young is released from a tube, quickly treed by a canine that lies in wait. This might seem rather cruel, but this “tough love” process will hopefully keep the bear from returning to Colorado Springs homes – the reason for its capture and relocation in the first place. Sometimes considered to be controversial, Colorado utilizes a “two-strike” policy when it comes to bears. What this means is that the first time a bear causes problems, it’s relocated. The second time, it’s euthanized.
