Sled dogs to race this weekend in Colorado mountain town

Experience the adventures of sled dogs, Skijor, and Fat Bikejor Races in the historic town of Silverton this Saturday and Sunday.

The 2020 Silverton Flying Sled Dog Races are set to take place this Saturday and Sunday (January 11-12) in Silverton, Colorado. The first race will kick off at 9:30 AM on Saturday. There’s also a Musher Truck Parade and Saturday evening Banquet held at the Grand Imperial Hotel. Plus, a BikeJor race and a Skijor Clinic for beginners.

If you’re not familiar with the term skijoring, it’s a popular winter sport seen in mountainous states like Colorado where a person on skis is pulled by a horse, dog, or vehicle.

All events are scheduled to take place at Molas Lake Park unless stated otherwise. Take a look at the 2o20 schedule below:

Saturday 9:00 am Musher’s Meeting 9:30 am 6 Dog Sled, 6 Mile 10:00 am 2 Dog 6 Mile Skijor 11:00 am 4 Dog Sled, 4 Mile 11:30 am 1 Dog 4 Mile Skijor Noon Fat Bike Jor 1:00 pm Clinic – FREE TO THE PUBLIC 5:00 pm Dog Truck Parade, Greene Street 6:00 pm Musher’s Banquet @ Grand Imperial

Sunday 9:30 am 6 Dog Sled, 6 Mile 10:00 am 2 Dog 6 Mile Skijor 11:00 am 4 Dog Sled, 4 Mile 11:30 am 1 Dog 4 Mile Skijor Noon Awards Ceremony

The race will feature both a two and four-mile course with a few challenging curves and humps. If snow conditions allow, there’s also an option for 6.5-mile run up to Eureka. Spectators are asked to leave pets at home during all races. For more details, click here.
