Ski country road “closed until further notice” following rockslide, avalanche in Colorado

Dillon Dam Road will remain closed “until further notice” – likely the next two weeks – following a rockslide and avalanche that took place on Sunday, according to Summit County officials.

Sliding snow and rocks damaged the protective netting on the cliff face above the mountain road. The road closure is expected to last for a minimum of two weeks while crews make repairs.

Summit Daily  reported that one car was hit by a boulder that came rolling down the hillside near the Dillon Reservoir’s “glory hole.” While the boulder left a large dent on the hood of the vehicle, no injuries were reported.

Dillon Dam Road is located in Summit County, just west of Silverthorne. Here’s a look at where it’s located on the map.

Beware of Falling Boulders

As spring temperatures arrive, rockslide dangers are likely to increase throughout parts of the state. If traveling through high-risk areas, please remember to use caution and watch for rocks and other debris that may fall into the roads.

It’s not uncommon to see rocks on the roads in Colorado – unless, of course, it’s an 8.5 million-pound rock that’s the size of a house. The massive boulder named “Memorial Rock” remains on Highway 145 in southwest Colorado, between Cortez and Telluride.

Check CDOT’s Facebook, Twitter (@coloradodot) or  cotrip.org for closures and delays on highways and roads across Colorado.
