Five Points holding virtual town halls to discuss homeless camps
The Five Points community is holding three virtual town halls this week to discuss the possibility of establishing a managed campsite for homeless people within Five Points.
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock announced Saturday that a piece of city property in Five Points was being considered as one of three sites for the project. The property is between Sonny Lawson Park and the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library.
“No final decisions have been made and would not be without first engaging with then community,” Hancock said Saturday.
The first meeting will be held Wednesday at 5 p.m., the second on Thursday at 7 p.m. and the final meeting on Saturday at 11 a.m.
These town halls are the community’s opportunity to discuss their feelings about the potential campsite.
Hancock said the campsites would be temporary and staffed 24 hours a day. The goal is to bring a controlled environment to uncontrolled encampments around Denver that have popped up as a response to challenges created by COVID-19.
“This virtual event seeks to provide residents in your area an opportunity to learn more about and discuss temporary outdoor safe spaces and services for people experiencing homelessness,” the city’s flier for the meetings read.
Deputy Chief of Staff Erin Brown will be moderating the town halls. Cuica Montoya from the Colorado Village Collaborative will also be present, in addition to representatives from Denver City Council, Curtis Park Neighbors and Five Points Business District.
The Zoom meeting IDs for each meeting are as follows:
- Wednesday: 949 4650 2036
- Thursday: 947 2590 1055
- Saturday: 926 1291 6822
The meeting password is TSOS.
“We look forward to the discussion with neighbors about this particular site, and with residents around the city as other sites come into focus,” Hancock said Saturday.
