Man sentenced to 20 years for assaulting guard at Jefferson County jail

A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for assaulting a sheriff’s deputy while he was an inmate at the Jefferson County jail, the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Roger Freyta, 39, pleaded guilty to hitting a guard who worked in the jail in Golden with a handmade weapon, causing a concussion, contusions and lacerations to the guard’s face and hand in January, the DA’s office said.

Freyta used a padlock he had stolen from the deputy’s workstation and tied a strip of fabric from a pillowcase, according to the DA’s office.

As the deputy was walking out of the sleeping area after completing the routine 11 p.m. lockdown, Freyta reportedly hit the deputy in the face and head.

Freyta pleaded guilty on July 13, the DA’s office said.

He is also facing charges for attempted sexual assault on a child and internet luring of a child from 2019, court records show.
