Elk gores man at Colorado golf course

A man was seriously injured during a wild animal attack in Colorado over the weekend.

According to a report from Fox31 Denver, a man was attacked and almost killed by an elk at a golf course in Evergreen, Colorado.

Golfer Zak Bornhoft’s group was on the course in a golf cart when a large bull elk charged. One of the elk’s antlers caught Bornhoft in the stomach, pushing through to his kidney. Bornhoft was rushed to the hospital with doctors believing a slightly different placement of the antler would have killed him.

According to CBS Denver, the man is in the intensive care unit at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.

Watch the video below to hear the story in his words.

As hundreds of elk flood civilized areas in Colorado each fall, it’s important to steer clear of these potentially dangerous animals. It’s unclear what prompted this elk to charge and sometimes, it doesn’t take any sort of aggressive act on behalf of the human to prompt this response.

During elk rut season, it’s especially important to remember that elk are wild animals. Even if they might be letting people get close to them one moment, their temperament can change on the drop of a dime. Don’t assume that because an elk, or any other wild animal, is in a civilized space that it’s any more tame than those found in the wilderness.
