Nearly 60,000 sign petition against reinstatement of Aurora officers who mocked Elijah McClain death

Tens of thousands have signed a Change.org petition advocating against the reinstatement of three former Aurora police officers who took a selfie mocking the death of Elijah McClain.

The petition, started two weeks ago by Aurora resident Darlene Jones, has garnered around 57,000 signatures thus far.

“These are supposed to be those that ‘serve and protect’ the most diverse community in Colorado,” Jones said. “The sheer lack of respect for human life makes them a danger to the public and they should not be police officers.”

McClain, a Black man, was 23 years old when he was killed in Aurora after being placed in a chokehold by police and sedated by fire rescue paramedics on Aug. 24, 2019.

Though McClain was unarmed and had committed no crime, a passerby called 911 to report him as “suspicious” while he walked home from a convenience store.

Less than two months later on Oct. 20, 2019, officers Erica Marrero, Kyle Dittrich and Jaron Jones took a smiling selfie at a memorial to McClain at the site where he had been stopped, reenacting a chokehold.

The photo was sent to Jason Rosenblatt, one of the officers who arrested McClain in August, who responded “haha.”

Dittrich, Marrero and Rosenblatt were fired in July and filed an appeal less than a week later. Jaron Jones resigned.

Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson called the photo “a crime against humanity and decency” during the firings.

The Aurora Civil Service Commission’s hearings for the appeals will begin Wednesday, Jones said.

“If these officers are reinstated it will let the world know that Aurora does not want justice to be served,” Jones said. “Aurora Police Department will be letting down Elijah McClain’s family, his friends and all those who stood up with love and support.”

The petition has inspired many strong responses from supporters.

“The complete disregard for human life displayed by their actions cannot be excused and is a reflection of their poor judgment and character,” said Denver resident Ibonne Pineda.

“The disdain and disrespect these officers showed for a young black life is disgusting,” said commenter Gabrielle Vendette. “They are ill-suited even to pretend to serve and protect the community.”

The petition has a goal of 75,000 signatures. It is available online at Change.org.
