E-470 completes multi-year construction project, adding third lane in Aurora
After nearly two years of construction, E-470 has completed its widening project, adding a third lane to eight miles in Aurora between Quincy Avenue and Interstate 70.
The new lanes, added to the toll road in each direction, will open for use on Monday.
“We have been able to deliver this crucial project in the midst of a global pandemic within budget and without raising tolls,” said E-470 Executive Director Tim Stewart.

The $99 million project was self-funded by E-470 without local or federal funding.
Stewart said E-470’s primary goal is to make improvements that address increased traffic demand while enhancing safety for the traveling public.
In addition to widening the road to allow for more traffic, the project expanded 14 northbound and southbound bridge structures, added new on- and off-ramps, improved weather drainage and upgraded traffic signals and signs.
Other changes included 15 miles of new or reset wildlife fencing around E-470 and extending the High Plains Trail that runs along the road by six miles.

“This major project once again shows the Authority’s commitment to making ongoing investments that maintain E-470’s position as the premier tollway,” said Chaz Tedesco, E-470 Authority board chair.
In 2020, E-470 won a Toll Excellence Award from the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association and executive director Stewart was announced an honorary member of IBTTA.
Officials said the project allows for the possibility of adding a fourth lane sometime in the future.
