RTD suspends certification program for small construction businesses

RTD temporarily suspended its Small Business Certification (SBE) program this week, providing enhanced business opportunities to local small construction businesses.

RTD will no longer accept or process new certifications for the time being. Businesses already certified as SBEs through RTD will continue to have access to updates, renewals, projects and contracts.

The SBE program provides certified businesses with regular opportunity alerts, direct contacts to primes, networking events and increased opportunities to participate in locally and federally funded projects.

RTD’s website said the program “creates a level playing field, removing barriers and assisting in the development of businesses.”

“We are focused on building a stronger Colorado economy by certifying firms, ensuring compliance of goals set, and providing training so (SBEs) can grow and thrive in this competitive industry,” it said.

RTD did not offer an explanation for why the program is being suspended.

RTD union votes overwhelmingly for contract extension

RTD is continuing its Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program as normal, providing certification to small businesses owned by a socially and economically disadvantaged individual in control of the firm.

RTD’s Small Business Office also continues to operate, focusing on small businesses that are minority, disadvantaged and/or women-owned. The Small Business Office is part of RTD’s Civil Rights Division.

In place of RTD’s SBE program, qualifying businesses can apply for certification through Denver’s Small Business Enterprise program or Minority/Women Business Enterprise program.
