Weather: Heavy wet snow in the mountains, cool down on the way in Denver
Wet, heavy snow is expected to fall onto the mountains and along Interstate 70 mountain corridors through Wednesday evening, making the roadways slippery and dangerous.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory at Idaho Springs to just west of Vail until Thursday as 6 to 12 inches of snow are expected to fall, said Scott Entrekin, a meteorologist for the NWS Boulder.
Entrekin said as temperatures continue to drop overnight places like the Eisenhower Tunnel will become wet, slushy and unsafe.
“I wouldn’t want to be up there,” Entrekin said.
Just east and along the Front Range in southeast Grand, southwest Boulder, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Summit and north and west Park counties, a winter storm warning is in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday.
Officials are expecting 6 to 14 inches of snow in the affected area with wind gusts up to 60 mph, said Entrekin.
Despite the heavy winter weather affecting most of central and western portions of the state, Denver neared a daily high on Wednesday as it reached 67 degrees.
But don’t get those shorts and flip-flops out just yet, because a cold front will be moving in overnight with the winter storm system and could bring an inch of snow around the metro.
Cooler temperatures are expecting beginning Thursday as the high will be in the upper-30’s, but temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-40’s over the weekend.
However, temperatures will drop again early next week with expected high’s in the 20’s, Entrekin said.
