16-year-old skier dies after crashing into tree at Eldora Mountain Resort

A 16-year-old boy died Monday after he hit a tree while skiing at the Eldora Mountain Resort in Boulder County — the second death in two days at the resort.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said the boy was skiing on the Lower Ambush Run when he struck the tree. Lower Ambush is a blue square trail for intermediate-level skiers.

Bystanders called 911 shortly after 11 a.m. to report the collision, deputies said.

Emergency responders performed life-saving measures and CPR without any effect. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

This is the second death at the Eldora Mountain Resort in the last two days and at least the third death at the resort in 2021.

A 26-year-old snowboarder died at the resort Sunday afternoon after he hit a tree while riding the Jolly Jug Run. On Jan. 14, a skier in his 50s died from crashing into a tree after he fell and slid down the Corona Run.

The 16-year-old boy’s cause and manner of death will be determined by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.

The office will release the boy’s identity after his family has been notified.

Agencies that responded to the incident included the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Eldora Ski Patrol, Nederland Fire Protection District, American Medical Response and Northern Colorado Med Evac.
