The city of Boulder will close all of its buildings and facilities Tuesday to give employees time to grieve and honor the victims of last week’s mass shooting at King Soopers, officials said.

Last Monday, 10 people were killed after a gunman opened fire at a King Soopers store on Table Mesa Drive, devastating the tight-knit community.

“Our entire community is reeling from this tragedy, including our employees,” said Interim City Manager Chris Meschuk. “Our staff need space and time to reflect, grieve and process an incredibly challenging week.”

Tuesday was chosen because of the public memorial service for Officer Eric Talley, one of the shooting victims, is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. Meschuk said many city employees are planning to attend the service.

The memorial service is being held at the Flatirons Community Church in Lafayette. In-person attendance will be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the service will be live streamed on local news stations and online at flatironschurch.com.

All city employees will have the Tuesday off except for those in essential roles that provide critical services, such as safety workers. Employees that have to work Tuesday will receive eight hours of vacation leave to use at a later date.

All public city meetings and city-sponsored engagement events will also be canceled Tuesday, including the Racial Equity Guiding Coalition meeting and new board/commission member orientation.
