CSP investigating fatal crash in Chaffee County
The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving a snow plow Thursday morning in Chaffee County.
Deputies responded to a crash near mile marker 140 where the driver of a 2014 Honda CRV traveling north on Highway 285 lost control and drifted into the oncoming lane of traffic. The car then collided with a Colorado Department of Transportation plow, according to a release from CSP.
The plow was actively plowing the roadways at the time of the crash and sent the Honda off the west side of the road where it rolled “two and three quarters times” before coming to a stop on the passenger side.
The driver of the Honda was identified as 46-year-old John Daugherty of Salida, who was pronounced dead on-scene.
Deputies said Daugherty was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Authorities are investigating whether excessive speed for winter road conditions played a role in the crash. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to have played a role at this time, according to the release.
The crash remains under investigation.
