Police: Westminster man says he fatally shot intruder in his home

The Westminster Police Department is investigating after a homeowner allegedly shot and killed a man who he said was an intruder inside of his home Monday morning.

Police said the shooting happened within a home in the 13500 block of Raritan Way, in between the Arapahoe Ridge Elementary School and Legacy High School.

The homeowner told police that the victim, an adult male, was an intruder in his home and there was a confrontation between them. However, the homeowner also said he knew the intruder.

Police have not disclosed the relationship between the men.

Police said the homeowner fired one shot, striking the intruder. The homeowner then called 911 and reported the shooting at around 9 a.m.

The intruder was transported to a hospital but died from his injuries shortly after. The Adams County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the man after his family is notified.

It is currently unclear why or how the intruder entered the home or what the confrontation was regarding.

The investigation is ongoing. Police said they are not looking for any other suspects and there is no risk to the community.

WPD and the Adams County District Attorney’s Office processed the scene and conducted interviews with witnesses Monday.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the Adams County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges against the homeowner are appropriate.
