Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office civilian employee arrested for alleged sexual assault

A civilian employee for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is in custody after allegedly sexually assaulting a juvenile female while on-duty.

Caleb May, 19, is currently being held in the Arapahoe County Detention Facility on sexual assault charges and has a bond of $65,000, according to online court records.

May is a member of the sheriff’s office Explorer program, which a program for people 14 to 21 who are interested in a profession in law enforcement. He is also a full-time employee of the agency as a community service specialist, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Community service specialists do not have any power of enforcement, and are responsible for making reports for low priority calls and to help with traffic enforcement, said Ginger Delgado, a public information officer for the department.

Deputies said the victim, a fellow explorer who knows May, reported the alleged assault on Wednesday.

The victim told deputies that she was eating lunch in her vehicle with two friends at the King Soopers at 7575 S. University Blvd. in Centennial around 11:40 a.m. Monday.

Her friends observed a marked ACSO vehicle driving through the King Soopers parking lot, but then left the vehicle and returned to school, according to the affidavit.

While the victim was alone, May, approached her and asked if he could join her for lunch. The victim agreed and after a short conversation began to feel uncomfortable, according to the affidavit.

The victim told May she needed to return to class, but then he allegedly put his arm around the victim and would not let go despite her resistance.

May then allegedly put his hand down her pants and underwear and grabbed her butt, and allegedly performed a sexual act.

The victim told May no repeatedly, but he replied “just let me do it,” according to the affidavit.

After the altercation, May left the vehicle and told the victim “you know I just made your day,” before the victim returned to school.

Prior to the incident, May allegedly has attempted to pursue a romantic relationship with the victim, but has been repeatedly told she is not interested, but continues to bombard her phone with calls and text messages, according to the affidavit.

During the interview with ACSO deputies, the victim was asked to communicate with May “indicating she was upset.”

Following the text message, May attempted to call the victim, but later texted her saying “he wanted to apologize,” “he didn’t mean for it to go down that way” and “are you going to turn me in,” according to the affidavit.

Deputies went to May’s residence shortly after midnight on Thursday to discuss the interaction, where “he admitted he hugged her, kissed her and put his hand down her pants.”

May was taken into custody and is currently on unpaid leave as an internal investigation is conducted, Delgado said.

May is scheduled to appear in an Arapahoe County District Court room on May 11.
