Staunton State Park offering chair trips on trails for people with disabilities
Staunton State Park near Conifer is accepting reservations for its track chairs program, allowing visitors with disabilities to experience some of the park’s hiking trails.
The park has four track chairs and one grit freedom chair, with access available on the Davis Ponds Trail and Mason Creek, each 2.1 to 2.5 miles long. The 5-mile Staunton Ranch Trail will also be opening to the chairs in the coming weeks.
“Being able to offer the therapeutic benefits of the outdoors to all of our visitors is truly rewarding,” said Zach Taylor, park manager for Staunton.
Chair trips will start on June 4 and run through the end of October. Individual trips are run on weekends and group trips for organizations are run on Mondays through Thursdays.
Reservation system coming to Brainard Lake, Mount Evans
Track chair users will be given a brief questionnaire to ensure their individual needs can be met. A park volunteer will accompany all excursions and a suggested checklist will be provided at the time of the reservation.
Reservations for individual track chair trips can be made online. Organizations interested in running a group trip should email staunton.trackchair@state.co.us.
Staunton State Park will also hold its first Adaptive Recreation Weekend on June 12-13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to showcase Colorado’s adaptive recreation options, featuring fishing, track chair trips, archery and more.
