Driver dies after running red light, crashing into another vehicle in Aurora

One person is dead after a driver ran a red light, resulting in a serious crash, the Aurora Police Department announced Saturday.

The crash happened about 10 p.m. Friday at East Colfax Avenue and Tower Road, involving a blue Mini Cooper and a red Honda Civic, according to police.

Police said the driver of the Mini Cooper was going eastbound on East Colfax Avenue at a high rate of speed when they ran a red light at Tower Road.

At the same time, the driver of the Honda Civic was stopped on the eastbound shoulder, attempting to make a U-turn.

While making the U-turn, the driver of the Civic was broadsided by the driver of the Mini Cooper, police said.

2 teens injured in separate Aurora shootings

The driver of the Mini Cooper, a 51-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and later died at a hospital, police said. The driver of the Civic, a 32-year-old woman, also suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.

The identity of the deceased will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office once he has been positively identified and his family has been notified.

Police are investigating whether speed, alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. As of Sunday morning, no charges have been filed against the driver of the Honda Civic in relation to the crash.
