The I-70 viaduct demolition began between Brighton and Colorado boulevards on May 22 and is more than 50% complete.
“The progress being made on the viaduct demolition is impressive, and it’s all being done without affecting I-70 traffic now traveling in the lowered section of the highway,” said Bob Hays, the Central 70 project director in a release.

Drivers going north will be detoured along 40th Avenue onto Colorado Boulevard to 46th North Avenue. Southbound traffic will be diverted on the same route, but the opposite direction, according to the state transportation department.
The Central 70 project is a $1.2 billion project that broke ground in 2018. It will reconstruct portions of I-70 while also adding a new Express Lane in both directions.
CDOT anticipates traffic modifications will reach the final stages by late 2022, but landscaping, installation of park elements and additional work will continue through 2023.
