A North Carolina teacher has reportedly resigned after coming under fire for giving her English students a racially insensitive lesson and making racist comments in the past.

The teacher who resigned reportedly told her black students that if it were not for the Constitution, they would be her “field slaves.” The Winterville Character Academy Principal Annastasia Ryan supported the resignation, the Virginian-Pilot reported.

“She had them raise their hand during a constitutional lesson and reminded them that if it wasn’t for the Constitution, they would be her slaves,” parent Kanisha Tillman told WITN-TV.

Tillman told the Associated Press she had received a text message from a parent hinting that a teacher at the school was treating black and white students differently. Following this exchange, Tillman’s son reportedly recalled a situation in the class in which a black student tried to educate a fellow student after being called a “monkey.”

The black student tried to ask the teacher for help, and the teacher responded by stating, “We’re all a little bit racist.” The same teacher then allegedly threatened to write the black student up after he called the white student a “cracker,” according to the Associated Press.

Ryan reportedly sent a memo on Sept. 24 acknowledging there had been a “racially insensitive lesson regarding the importance of the Constitution of the United States” during the teacher’s English class on Constitution Day.

In Ryan’s memo, she assures parents the teacher “will not be returning on campus” and that “culturally sensitive training” will be made for the teacher who had resigned, along with “current and future staff members,” of the school, according to WITN-TV.

Ryan reportedly noted they were investigating another situation in which a racially insensitive comment was made by one of the students at the school, according to WITN-TV.

Colleen Cullison, spokeswoman for National Heritage Academies, the parent company for Winterville Charter Academy, explained the “school leadership” had responded “immediately” after hearing about the racially insensitive lesson and racist comments made by students, assuring that school officials will address parents concerns.

A Virginia high school teacher recently posted a video on TikTok that said telling students to behave themselves in the classroom falls under “white supremacy.”
