Broncos re-sign linebacker Josey Jewell to 2-year deal
DENVER • The Broncos have re-signed inside linebacker Josey Jewell, The Gazette confirmed Tuesday. The deal is for two years and worth $11 million with a team option in the second year.
Jewell was drafted by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft and has started 30 games in Denver. His 2021 season was shortened after suffering a torn pec in Week 2 against the Jaguars. Still, in those two games Jewell was impressive and was on pace to have the best season of his career, totaling eight tackles and two tackles for loss.
Jewell has totaled 217 tackles in his career and is expected to be one of the Broncos’ starting middle linebackers going forward, alongside rookie Baron Browning.
Jewell was one of three unrestricted free-agent inside linebackers for the Broncos, alongside Alexander Johnson and Kenny Young. With Jewell now signed, the Broncos may not re-sign Johnson or Young. The Broncos also tendered linebacker Jonas Griffith, who started the final four games for the Broncos and appears to be a contributor on defense and special teams moving forward.
The Broncos probably will still look to add one more inside linebacker, whether it’s through re-signing Young or Johnson, free agency or the draft.
Broncos sign Tomlinson
The Broncos also agreed to terms with former Ravens tight end Eric Tomlinson on Tuesday. Tomlinson, 29, has been in the NFL since 2016 and has mostly served in a backup role, having stints with with the Jets, Patriots, Giants, Raiders and the Ravens. He has 18 receptions, 201 yards and one touchdown. Tomlinson will help fill the void of Noah Fant, who was traded to Seattle in the Russell Wilson trade.
