George W. Bush to hold public conversation with Zelensky

Former President George W. Bush is set to hold a public conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week.

The conversation will be held virtually, with Zelensky talking with Bush via Zoom from Ukraine, the George W. Bush Presidential Center announced. The event is titled “The Struggle for Freedom,” with particular focus on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen will also join virtually to deliver remarks.

“Activists, experts, and leaders will gather at the Bush Institute to assess threats to freedom and offer recommendations on ways to advance the cause of liberty. Topics to be examined include the global struggle for freedom, pushing back against the authoritarian threat, the impact of emerging technologies, and how the U.S. can help support democracy and human rights abroad,” the description for the event reads.

The conversation won’t be the first time Bush has talked with Zelensky virtually. Back in May, the two held a brief virtual conversation, with Bush giving the Ukrainian president high praise, declaring him “the Winston Churchill of our time.”

“I was honored to spend a few minutes talking with President Zelensky – the Winston Churchill of our time – this morning. I thanked the President for his leadership, his example, and his commitment to liberty, and I saluted the courage of the Ukrainian people,” Bush said. “President Zelensky assured me that they will not waver in their fight against Putin’s barbarism and thuggery. Americans are inspired by their fortitude and resilience. We will continue to stand with Ukrainians as they stand up for their freedom.”
