Aurora police make arrest in Southlands Mall shooting that killed teen

A 16-year-old boy surrendered to police on Monday in connection with a shooting at the Southlands Mall in Aurora that killed a 15-year-old, police said Tuesday.

The Aurora Police Department did not identify the suspect because he is a minor. He was held on suspicion of second-degree murder, aggravated robbery and failure to report an accident to police.

Police said on Tuesday the suspect was advised of his charges.

The Arapahoe County Coroner said 15-year-old Raphael Velin was shot in the parking lot at 6100 Main Street on Sept. 30 at around 8:30 p.m. Aurora police said he died later at a hospital. His death was ruled a homicide by the coroner’s office.

Aurora Police Chief Art Acevedo said Monday that investigators think there were five suspects and multiple shooters, all juveniles and young adults.

Anyone with additional information about the shooting should contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
