Deion Sanders’ name and face are having monetary success off the field recently as trading cards for the CU Buffs head coach are trending skyward in value.

Sanders’ 1997 Metal Universe Red Precious Metal Gems trading card sold for $8,100 Sunday night in PWCC’s weekly auction to become Prime Time’s highest selling card of all time, PWCC reported Tuesday in a release.
“Precious Metal Gems cards are notoriously delicate as they feature a brilliant looking surface that chips easily and makes it very difficult to find copies in good condition,” PWCC Vice President of Communications Erik Hidle said.

“Demand for these cards is driven by both the rarity determined by the limited print run and those well-known condition issues. Of course, there’s another factor at play in that Deion Sanders remains active and relevant as a sports icon.”
Sanders’ record-breaking card features the cornerback during his time with the Dallas Cowboys (1995-1999) where he earned his second Super Bowl ring and a Pro Bowl selection in each season with the team. The card itself features unique art — illustrations of what appear to be some type of parasitical creatures with suction cup arms attempting to slow down Prime Time.
Precious Metal Gems (PMG) trading cards from the Metal Universe line are among the most sought-after trading cards ever produced, PWCC said. Players in the 1997 Metal Universe checklist received a PMG run of 150, with the first 15 copies found in Green foil and the remaining 135 in Red foil. Since the print run had only 135 copies, the Red PMG is not only rare, but often extremely difficult to find in good condition.
