Adams County officer dies in off-duty crash in Weld County
An Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputy died following a car crash in Weld County on his day off, according to the office. Detectives and Colorado State Patrol troopers are investigating the crash.
31-year-old Deputy Joshua Maloy died during an off-duty traffic collision on Sunday evening, according to a press release from the ACSO. Maloy was an Adams County deputy for two years and nine months. He served nine-and-a-half years with the United States Marine Corps before becoming an officer.
The sheriff’s office announced on Monday that Maloy had passed away in a social media post, stating: “We encourage you all to embrace your loved ones a little tighter today. Treasure every second you have with them, for these moments are what truly matter.”
A spokesperson with the ACSO told The Denver Gazette that there is not a lot of information on the crash at this time. The department only knows that the crash took place in Weld County and that Colorado State Patrol will be completing the investigation.
“We are grieving as an organization and law enforcement family and are awaiting answers as to what happened but are letting CSP conduct a full investigation,” ACSO said.
Colorado has experienced 521 fatal crashes between Jan. 1 and Nov. 28, 2023, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation — though statistics can lag by a few weeks. There were 754 crash fatalities in 2022, the most the state has seen in 41 years.
There have been 39 fatal crashes in Weld County so far this year.
