Stanley Marketplace adds exhibit honoring namesake

The Stanley Marketplace, a hub for local shopping in Aurora, opened an exhibit about the history of the marketplace and the legacy of its namesake Bob Stanley.

The exhibit is a collaboration between the Aurora History Museum, Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum and Stanley Marketplace and is open to visitors at the Marketplace, 2501 Dallas Street, according to Aurora’s monthly newsletter.

Stanley formed Stanley Aviation in 1948 and moved the company to Aurora in 1954. He was the first American to fly a jet plane and invented the ejection seat.

Stanley’s team created escape systems for airplanes flying slowly near ground level as well as supersonic jets in the stratosphere — lifesaving technology for pilots in damaged aircraft.

The exhibit has two ejection seats on display that were built at the facility, which later became the marketplace that stands today. There are also historic photos and educational displays about Stanley and the company.

Aurora History Museum Director T. Scott Williams said the exhibit highlights an important development in aviation technology that developed in Aurora and the museum is excited to open the exhibit to help teach the public.

“This was a great opportunity to work with Wings Over the Rockies and Stanley Marketplace to tell the amazing story of Stanley Aviation to the huge audience walking through Stanley Marketplace each day,” Williams said in the newsletter.

Stanley Marketplace sees about 1.1 million visitors each year and is home to more than 50 independently owned Colorado businesses, including restaurants, shops, salons and more.

The building has been around since 1954, opening as a 75,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and expanding to 140,000 square feet in just a few years. It quickly became the largest employer in Aurora, according to the marketplace website.

The exhibit opened on Jan. 11 and is free to the public.
