1 dead following fatal pedestrian crash in Aurora

Aurora Police officers responded to a fatal automotive-pedestrian crash Tuesday evening, marking the third pedestrian crash the department has reported this year.

Officers were called to a crash report around 6 p.m. in the area of 6th Avenue and Kenton Street, according to a press release by the Aurora Police Department. A 28-year-old man was found with life-threatening injuries.

The man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Identification will be verified by the Adams County Coroner, pending notification of family and an autopsy.

Westbound 6th Avenue was closed for the crash investigation until around 8 p.m., according to the department. Westbound traffic was diverted to Moline Street and eastbound was directed to Kenton Street.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was walking south across 6th Avenue when he was struck by an eastbound silver Chevrolet pickup truck. The driver, a 63-year-old man, stayed on the scene to help the investigation, according to the department. The pedestrian was not in the crosswalk when he was struck by the pickup.

Police do not believe speed or intoxication were contributing factors in the crash.

The pedestrian crash is the third the department has reported so far in 2024.

Another fatal crash occurred at Montview Boulevard and Elmira Street around 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 20.

A nonfatal pedestrian crash occurred in the 3100 block of South Parker Road around 10 p.m. on Jan. 20.

Preliminary numbers show that there were 128 pedestrian crash deaths reported in Colorado in 2023, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation’s data dashboard.

2022 saw the state’s highest number on record, with 115 deaths. This number represented 15% of the state’s total traffic fatalities.

Aurora saw 19 pedestrian crash deaths in 2023 — a decrease from the 21 in 2022, but a drastic increase from the 9 in 2021.

The city already have two 41 days into the year.
