16-year-old boy charged as adult in killing of teen who was driving near her home

Prosecutors charged a 16-year-old boy as an adult with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting of a 19-year-old woman who was fatally shot while driving near her Adams County home.

On Wednesday the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced that they’ve charged Devin Padilla with the following:

  • First-degree murder-after deliberation
  • First-degree murder-extreme indifference
  • First-degree attempted murder-after deliberation
  • First-degree attempted murder-extreme indifference

Padilla’s charged in a shooting and crash that happened in the 1900 block of Sherrelwood Circle on Jan. 28. Amia Radke, 19, was shot while she was driving and died as a result of her injuries, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. Family members said she was driving with her mother about a block from their home when the shooting happened.

“She was with my mom, and they had pulled up and seen someone in the middle of the road,” Amia’s sister Alicianna Garrison told Denver Gazette media partner 9News earlier this week. “My mom noticed that the guy was raising his hand, and my mom just screamed at Amia and said ‘go, go go!’ and they shot, and they got her instantly.”

According to the family, Radke’s mother broke both of her ankles and one of her femurs in the crash and is expected to remain hospitalized for weeks.

Despite the arrest and charges, the sheriff’s office asked nearby residents to check their security cameras for any footage they may have from between 8 p.m. on Jan. 27 and 3 a.m. on Jan. 28. The sheriff’s office said previously that the suspect was likely on foot and had possibly committed vehicle trespasses before the shooting.

Padilla made his first court appearance Wednesday morning. Due to his age, a booking photo was not released.
