Aurora man charged with first-degree murder, child abuse

The Adams County district attorney charged an Aurora man with first-degree murder and four counts of child abuse following a February shooting. One of the victims believe the shooting occurred after the suspect found out his child wasn’t biologically his.

Kelynn Lewis, 32, was arrested following a fatal shooting in the 1700 Block of Paris Street in Aurora on Feb. 9, according to arrest records. 17th Judicial District Attorney Brian Mason later charged Lewis with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and four counts of child abuse.

Aurora police officers arrived at the Paris Street Apartments, located at 1702 North Paris Street, around 8:30 p.m. A person had reported a shooting in one of the apartments, according to records. The suspect was reportedly still at the scene.

Upon arrival, officers found a woman at the scene, later identified as Deondranay McCain. She took officers into the apartment where they found 35-year-old Vatrice Lashae Little with a gunshot wound to the face. Aurora Fire Rescue attempted life-saving measures but she later died.

McCain claimed that her and Little, her cousin, were braiding each other’s hair in the bedroom when Lewis, McCain’s ex-husband, entered the room with a handgun. She later told police that she believes Lewis was upset because she told him that her youngest child was not his. Lewis had believed the child was his since birth, according to records.

Lewis allegedly shot at McCain, missing her head. McCain fell to the floor and pretended to be dead, she claimed. She believed Little tried to intervene and moved in front of her. She heard four-to-five shots and saw Little fall to the ground next to her.

McCain waited until Lewis left the apartment and called the police. Lewis was not at the scene when officers arrived.

Following witness descriptions, Aurora police arrested Lewis on Sunday. He was officially charged on Thursday.

Lewis is scheduled to appear in court on March 6.
