Arapahoe County deputy convicted of providing firearm to felon, fired

A federal jury in Denver convicted an Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputy of providing a firearm to a convicted felon.

Following the verdict, the officer was terminated by the department Tuesday.

A jury convicted 33-year-old Johnny Alvarado, of Lakewood, on Monday, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado. Alvarado had worked at the Arapahoe County Detention Facility as a deputy since Dec. 30, 2021.

Alvarado gave his brother-in-law, Kyle Garcia — a felon on supervised release — a loaded firearm. During a routine probation stop at Garcia’s home, officers found the firearm in his closet. Garcia admitted to having the weapon and said that he had received it from Alvarado.

Alvarado was then placed on paid suspension on May 12, 2023 following the announcement of a criminal investigation by the ATF Denver Field Division, according to a subsequent press release by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

He was then placed on unpaid suspension by the department following his arrest by the U.S. Marshal Service on May 19. He was officially terminated by the department following his conviction on Monday.

Alvarado later admitted that he provided Garcia with the weapon, despite knowing he was a convicted felon.

The sheriff’s office said that its Internal Affairs Unit opened an internal investigation on Alvarado following the announcement of the criminal investigation, but it was placed on hold pending the outcome of the criminal case.

Garcia pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 66 months of probation, according to the release. Alvarado will be sentenced at a later date.
