Buc-ee’s opens in Colorado

9 News

A line of people nearly wrapped around the building of Colorado’s newest gas station before 6 a.m. Monday at Buc-ee’s in Johnstown, off Interstate 25 and County Road 48.

“This is our merry ‘Buc-mas,'” said Jessica Forinash of Thornton. “This is the only time it opens. It never closes.”

“If you want to see it open you got to come now,” said the former Alabama resident, adding she’s happy it’s close again.

People stood in below-freezing temperatures wearing Buc-ee’s merchandise such as beaver onesies to T-shirts, while chanting “Buc-ee’s, Buc-ee’s” minutes before doors opened.

Once allowed in, guests ran into the store with hands in the air, then grabbed a shopping cart to fill with more original merch or darted to the food stands for fudge or beef brisket.

The cult-favorite Texas gas station chain boasting the ”world’s cleanest bathrooms” allowed the media access to the 74,000-square-foot gas station on 5201 Nugget Road, with 116 gas pumps and 12 electric charging stations, before the doors opened to the public.

The bathrooms had 34 stalls for women, 17 for men and 19 urinals. Each stall has green and red lights on the door indicating if it’s vacant or not, and the bathrooms have attendants all day, every day making sure it’s tidy and in best condition for travelers.

Lisa Nguyen, a “new fan” from Centennial, first heard about Buc-ee’s from a friend who got her a beaver plush as a gift.

“It’s more than a gas station. It’s more than a stop,” she remembered her friend telling her.

Then she visited one in Texas and found it a fun experience with good food, a pleasant restroom experience and “cute” beaver products.

“I don’t think I really understood the hype until after I’d been to one in Texas and I was like, ‘No, I get it now,’” Nguyen said.

The massive gas station and country store began construction in 2022. The Texas-based chain has 48 stations across the south in U.S. states Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee and Missouri. Alongside Colorado, Virginia is also poised to get a Buc-ee’s, with construction starting this year.

Colorado’s first location is right between Denver and Cheyenne, Wyoming. It’ll catch daily commuters or families visiting Estes Park and the Rocky Mountains, said Buc-ee’s director of operations Josh Smith.

“As you walk in, your sensories are gonna be overloaded from the fresh smell of the food being made, to the sweet cinnamon roasted nuts,” Smith said, “to all the aesthetics, the gift items like crystallized cow skulls and cow hides, and barbecue pits and everything with a beaver on it that you can imagine.”

The company is planning on expanding across the state, Smith said, but won’t say where yet.

The Johnstown location will attract more than 100,000 people a week, according to the city’s development manager Sarah Crosthwaite, and could generate $25 million in taxable sales yearly.

“We picked a great partner in the community of Johnstown for our first store in Colorado,” Buc-ee’s Stan Beard said in a previous statement. “At the foothills of the beautiful Northern Front Range, this Buc-ee’s will introduce all sorts of bikers, hikers, skiers, and campers to the cleanest restrooms, friendliest staff, and freshest food they’ll ever find on a road trip.”

The Johnstown station is expected to bring 200 jobs to the area, according to Buc-ee’s.

“This beaver built an economic dam on I-25 for us,” said Johnstown Mayor Troy Mellon at the Monday ribbon cutting ceremony.

It’ll attract people and their dollars to the town in the same way a beaver’s dam brings all sorts of wildlife to its lake, he said. The opening was highly anticipated to boost not only Johnstown’s economy, but also the Northern Colorado region and the whole state, as well.

“We have finally got something that isn’t from California,” said state Rep. Ryan Armagost, R-Berthoud, for the district covering Weld and Larimer counties. “We finally got something from Texas.”

Buc-ee’s founder Arch “Beaver” Aplin III told a crowd at the ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. that he wasn’t certain how the turnout would be for Colorado’s first location since the chain has focused most of its expansions on Texas and the Southeast U.S.

At the time of the ceremony, Buc-ee’s parking lot was overwhelmed and the street behind the travel center, Nugget Road, was lined with illegally parked cars on both sides. Customers stood in long lines for brisket and fresh beef jerky and cell phone service slowed as crowds took over the store and overwhelmed the free WiFi.

“I don’t know why we’re just now getting here,” Aplin said about Colorado’s long-awaited travel center.

Even Aplin was surprised by the large reception within the chain’s newest state and said the chain’s fans can expect more to come.

“This won’t be the only store in Colorado,” Aplin said. “We very much look forward to finding more opportunities to be here in y’all’s great state.”

Presidential primaries in retrospect: Dullest and least exciting in memory | Cronin and Loevy

Our imperfect presidential primary system has given us two imperfect national party nominees for president.
