Looking ahead: Aurora council to confirm direction on homeless service provider funds

The Aurora City Council will confirm in a study session on Monday night its direction on agreements with homeless service providers that will receive American Rescue Plan Act funds, a decision the council made at its winter workshop in February.

Due to a decrease in marijuana sales tax revenue, staff recommended reduced funding to homeless service providers. The recommendations were met with resistance from providers and a few councilmembers, resulting in a conversations to use the federal dollars to supplement the funding for providers who saw a decrease.

At its Winter Workshop, the council decided on ARPA fund amounts for those providers.

On Tuesday, staff will bring the item back to the council to confirm its direction before moving forward with agency agreements in the amounts as follows.

  • Bridge House – $50,000

  • Family Tree- $97,520

  • Gateway- $75,900

  • MHBHC Colfax Community Network- $161,700

  • Restoration Christian Ministries- $25,000

  • Salvation Army SOS Chambers- $35,000

  • Salvation Army SOS Peoria- $14,592

In the council’s regular meeting, the elected officials will also vote on an agreement between the city’s Youth Violence Prevention Program and Cherry Creek School District to allow student data and information sharing to reduce youth violence.

The agreement would help officials identify trends in things like discipline, chronic absence, drug violations, and grades, and connect students to service to help mitigate risk factors, according to agenda documents.

The councilmembers will also vote on a resolution supporting a cost-sharing agreement for involvement in a cloud seeding program to increase precipitation in the region and on an increase in the Aurora 911 surcharge per phone line.

The council’s study session begins virtually at 5:15 p.m. Monday and will be live streamed at www.AuroraTV.org and Youtube.com/TheAuroraChannel.

Following the study session, the council’s regular meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Paul Tauer City Council Chamber, 15151 E. Alameda Pkwy. It will also be streamed virtually on AuroraTV and YouTube.

Several city board and committee meetings will also take place next week, including the Management and Finance Policy Committee meeting on Tuesday, the Public Relations, Communications, Tourism, Libraries, Boards and Commissions and Citizens group meeting Wednesday, the Parks, Foundations and Quality of Life committee meeting Thursday and Federal, State and Intergovernmental Relations Policy Committee meeting Friday.
