Two victims at DoubleTree were shot, Denver’s medical examiner says

Denver’s medical examiner said the man and a woman found dead inside a room at the DoubleTree shelter for homeless people hotel on Saturday were shot.

The examiner ruled the deaths of Sandra Cervantes, 43, and Dustin Nunn, 38, a homicide.

Cervantes suffered one gunshot wound and Nunn died of multiple gunshot wounds, a spokesperson for the Office of the Medical Examiner said.

No further updates on the homicide investigation were available as of Wednesday, police said.

A Denver police spokesperson initially said the deaths were not the result of a shooting.

Authorities posted a $2,000 reward for anyone who can help provide information leading to the arrest of a suspect or suspects. Investigators asked those with information about the homicides to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-7867.

The hotel-turned shelter at 4040 Quebec Street serves hundreds of homeless people.

Between August and January, Denver authorities acquired five hotels and converted them into shelters, a key strategy for the Johnston administration, which moved 1,135 people out of the city’s streets before 2023 ended.

Denver approved the lease-purchase agreement for the DoubleTree hotel for $83,333.33 a month for up to 15 months, with the option to purchase the 289-room hotel for up to $43 million at any time during the lease.

An LLC associated with Rocky Mountain Communities purchased the hotel, located just south of I-70 and nestled in a pocket of open space, for $39 million on Nov. 28, according to property records. The nonprofit is leasing the property to the city and serves as its landlord.

The Salvation Army is under a $10 million contract with the city to operate the DoubleTree.

Between Oct. 1 and Jan. 12, Denver Police dispatchers fielded 1,212 emergency 911 calls from the hotel and area within 1,000 meters of it, according to Department of Public Safety data obtained by The Denver Gazette.

The calls included shootings, suspected illegal drug use, theft, assaults and other reported acts of violence.
