Denver weather: More wind on Tuesday, freeze watch in effect

A crew from Timberline Landscaping remove a downed fir tree in the yard of a home in the Skyway neighborhood on the westside of Colorado Springs Monday, May 6, 2024. Winds as high as 60 miles an hour hit the area early Monday morning. The homeowner said he heard the tree fall about 5:30 a.m. The house was mostly spared because the tree landed on top of a juniper tree instead of directly on the house. Winds that wreaked havoc in the Denver area on Monday should be less on Tuesday, but residents will need to prepare for a possible freeze overnight and early Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.
Tuesday is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high of 62 degrees and a 10% chance of thunderstorms after noon, the NWS said.
Winds of 20-25 mph should decrease after midnight, but the NWS has placed Denver and surrounding areas under a freeze watch from midnight to 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Widespread windy conditions will continue today with gusts 50 to 65 mph across the mountains and foothills. Across the plains wind gusts will be in the 40 to 50 mph range with a few higher gusts over the Palmer Divide. Snow will continue in the mountains with blowing snow and poor visibility over the higher passes.
“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possible damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” NWS warns.
Here is the extended forecast from the National Weather Service:
Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 61. Breezy, with a west southwest wind 13 to 17 mph becoming north northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph.
