Cold blooded: Thieves slither away with nearly a dozen reptiles in Colorado Springs
A reptile store in northern Colorado Springs was hit by a smash and grab early Wednesday morning, walking away with just under a dozen reptiles.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, officers received a call for service at the Scales ‘N Tails store on North Academy Blvd at approximately 5:06 a.m. regarding broken glass.
Security footage of the break-in shows a group of four suspects breaking through a glass window to make entry into the store.
At this time, CSPD investigators are still working to identify the suspects. If located, the suspects could face charges of 2nd degree burglary, theft and criminal mischief, CSPD PIO Caitlin Ford told the Gazette.
Scales ‘N Tails reported that five ball pythons and six bearded dragons were stolen along with a cage and cage decorations. Five of the six bearded dragons were babies, according to the owner.
According to the store’s social media post sharing the security footage, owners of the store fear the stolen reptiles will not get proper care and are in grave danger.
“Ultimately, we want to get the animals back,” owner Ronald Bohnert Jr. said. “Our main goal, obviously, is to catch the people, that’s a bonus, but if they dropped them off on our front porch, that would be great.”
Bohnert said none of the animals taken were venomous, the concern is more for the animals’ safety.
Bohnert believes the suspects involved in Wednesday’s break-in are the same individuals who attempted to break in Monday night. Bohnert says the group threw rocks at the front door, and despite causing enough damage for the door to need to be replaced, were unable to get in.
On Wednesday morning, the group first attempted to pull the door off using their vehicle, unsuccessfully. The suspects then threw rocks at the service window and were able to gain entry that way.
No money was taken and no damage was done to the interior of the store. Bohnert is unsure at this time if he will be setting up a GoFundMe to aid in replacing the broken exterior glass, but is considering it.
“I’m frustrated and I’m upset,” Bohnert said. “I feel violated, obviously, because they came into our workplace where we serve the community.”
Police are investigating the robbery.
