Two teens arrested following Aurora shooting

The Aurora Police Department arrested two teenage boys in connection to a shooting near a playground on Wednesday.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. outside an apartment complex at 12437 East Ford Ave., which is northeast of South Peoria Street and East Mississippi Avenue. Two teens, a 12-year-old boy and 14-year-old boy, were shot, according to a previous news release from the department.

Following the incident, four teens were detained by the department but none were officially arrested.

A 15-year-old boy and 14-year-old boy were then arrested by the department on Friday, a spokesperson told The Denver Gazette.

The 14-year-old was arrested on three outstanding warrants, including second-degree assault, third-degree assault and criminal mischief.

The 15-year-old was arrest on suspicion of possession of a dangerous/illegal weapon, possession of a weapon by a juvenile and obstructing a peace officer.

“The 15-year-old was in possession of an illegally modified handgun that was equipped with an auto switch that converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic handgun,” the department said.

Investigators are still working to identify the suspects’ exact involvement in the shooting and whether the recovered handgun was used in the incident. They will also be working with the district attorney’s office to determine charges for others who have not been arrested yet.

“The ambulance was taking care of the kids who got shot and the police started making us back up and they started going around the houses, checking if they could find the people. And then, they found them in a house. They were there for maybe 40 minutes at a stalemate,” Steven Barranco, who lives nearby, told The Denver Gazette’s news partner, 9News.
