It started with a phone call from a victim wondering about the statute of limitations on sexual abuse. After three victims of a Boulder swim teach coach quickly came forward with decades-old allegations, Jon Michael Beber was brought to Colorado from Fulton County, Georgia for trial, found guilty in April, and given a lengthy sentence Friday.
Twentieth Judicial District Judge Bruce Langer imposed a 42-year prison sentence for sex offenses against multiple underage swimmers who competed for Boulder Swimming from 1997 through early 2002. Beber worked as a swim coach for the team, but when allegations started surfacing in 2002, he resigned and left Colorado.
According to a press release from the Boulder District Attorney’s office, Beber, 54, also coached swim teams in New York, Florida and Georgia throughout his career. He was working as the CFO of Atlanta’s Joy Café when he was arrested according to Atlanta News First.
The jury found Beber guilty on all charges including two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust with a pattern of abuse, a class 3 felony, and one count of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, a class 4 felony.
Beber was sentenced to 18 years-to-life on two of the counts, and six years-to-life for the third count. The judge ordered the sentences to be served consecutively for a total of 42 years-to-life in the Department of Corrections.
“This type of case is every person’s worst nightmare. Parents drop kids off for practice or school and hope that the adults in charge are not abusing their position of trust,” said Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty. “This defendant did exactly that, for years.”
Beber’s Denver attorney, Martin Stuart, said in an email that he plans to appeal the ruling.
