Recount confirms Republican Larry Don Suckla’s HD 58 primary victory by 3-vote margin

After a state-mandated recount, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold confirmed on Tuesday that Republican Larry Don Suckla remains the House District 58 primary winner.

“The mandatory recount for House District 58 is complete and has confirmed the results of the race with just a three-vote margin,” said Secretary of State Jena Griswold in a news release. “I commend the election workers in the eight counties in House District 58 for conducting this recount.”

The final vote tallies as determined by the recount:

Larry Don Suckla – 6,489 votes (50.1%), net change +1

J. Mark Roeber – 6,486 (49.99%), net change +1

Suckla, a former Montezuma County commissioner who served from 2012 to 2020, took to Facebook to announce, “We won by a landslide three votes. We are the official rep (Republican) candidate on the ballot for November. Now we need to beat the Democrat competitor.”

Suckla will now face Democratic candidate Kathleen Curry in the November general election for the seat currently held by term-limited Republican Marc Catlin.

Curry, a three-term state Rep. and Speaker Pro Tempore rattled the Colorado House when she announced her departure from the Democratic Party to become unaffiliated.

She changed her voter registration back to Democrat in June of 2023.

A statutorily mandated recount was required for the race for the Republican primary race for House District 58 due to the narrow vote margin between the winning and losing candidates. C.R.S. 1-10.5-101 states, “A recount of any election contest shall be held if the difference between the highest number of votes cast in that election contest and the next highest number of votes cast in that election contest is less than or equal to one-half of one percent of the highest vote cast in that election contest.”

After canvass boards confirmed that the difference in votes cast between the winning and losing candidates fell below 0.5%, Secretary Griswold ordered a mandatory recount for the race on July 15, 2024.

As required by statute, the recount had to be completed by July 26.

Colorado’s House District 58 includes Dolores, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel counties and parts of Delta and Montezuma counties.

“The unofficial results of the Republican primary race for House District 58 race show that every vote matters,” Griswold said.
