12-year-old girl hit by truck on her way to Aurora school
A 12-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle while she was traveling to school on Wednesday morning.
The Aurora Police Department (ADP) responded to an auto-pedestrian crash near the intersection of South Harvest Road and Orchard Road around 9 a.m. Wednesday, a spokesperson from the department told The Denver Gazette.
A girl had been hit by a truck making a left-hand turn while the girl was crossing the street on a motorized or electric scooter, police said. The girl was traveling to school with her friends, but police do not know which school.
The driver remained at the scene to help with the investigation. The parents of the child decided to take her to the hospital as a precaution, though the injuries seemed minor.
“We’ve got a lot of young ones going back to school in Aurora,” Sgt. Bill Hummel of APD’s Traffic Section said in a social media post on Aug. 7.
“What we’re asking for is really to just pay attention,” he said. “You’re in a school zone, you know there’s going to be kids present. Look around, be vigilant, and if you’re driving at a safe speed, you’ll be able to stop before there’s ever any kind of accident.”
APD did not note if speed was a factor in Wednesday’s crash or if any citations were issued.
