Mudslide closes highway near Glenwood Springs

A mudslide caused a highway south of Glenwood Springs to close Sunday, according to a Facebook post from the Colorado Department of Transportation. 

CDOT said CO 82 is closed in both directions 5 miles south of Glenwood Springs between Mile Point 5 and 6 following a mudslide the occurred overnight. 

CO 82 will remain fully closed throughout the night as crews continue to clean up the “significant debris” on the highway. CDOT estimated that more than 50 truckloads of debris were hauled away as of 2 p.m.

Drivers are advised to take an alternate route using County Road 154 (Old State Highway 82 Bypass) that runs adjacent to CO 82.

Eastbound lanes going toward Aspen are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. CDOT said its goal is to have the highway fully open by 12 p.m.

Monday morning commuters are advised to give themselves extra travel time.
