Man who stole vehicle with girl inside, prompting Amber Alert, sentenced after pleading guilty

A man who stole a car with a 6-year-old girl inside pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts and was sentenced to three years of probation.

Kirk Abercrombie, 35, pleaded guilty to motor vehicle theft and reckless endangerment. He was immediately sentenced to three years of probation for each charge to run concurrently, according to court records. Six other charges, including second-degree kidnapping and child abuse, were dropped as part of the plea agreement.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued an Amber Alert for the girl on the night of April 21 after a 2015 Jeep Compass was stolen with her inside from a gas station in the area of East Iliff Avenue and South Havana Street in Aurora.

The Amber Alert was issued around 10:25 p.m. Police said around 10:50 p.m. that the girl had been found safe, a suspect was in custody and the Amber Alert was canceled.

Police got a description of the vehicle and the suspect from surveillance footage. The mother’s phone was in the vehicle, which helped law enforcement pinpoint that the vehicle was in the northern part of the state.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office made the arrest when a deputy spotted the vehicle. Law enforcement followed before making a traffic stop, taking Abercrombie into custody and finding the girl safe.

Aurora Police said the Jeep was left unattended and running when it was stolen.
