Veterans Day closures and events around metro Denver

The winter season kicks off this weekend with Veterans Day, closing various government buildings, schools and other services in observance of the federal holiday.

Monday marks Veterans Day — the holiday celebrating U.S. veterans that was initially established in 1919 as the first anniversary of the end of World War I. And, like any federal holiday, courts will be closed, and cities and counties will shut down government buildings and offices to celebrate the day.

Denver, Douglas, Adams, Arapahoe and Jefferson County will all be celebrating the holiday on Monday, closing all government offices. These closures will include services like the Department of Motor Vehicles and libraries. But, while city government offices will be closed, the majority of other services will be open.

Mail services will also be postponed during the holiday. Most businesses and restaurants will remain open on Monday — though some may operate with altered schedules. People should check specific business websites before traveling to them.

All 24-hour agencies — like emergency services and the Denver International Airport — will remain fully operational on Monday.

Street parking throughout the city of Denver will also be free on Monday for the holiday. It will return to normal prices on Tuesday. Denver public transportation via the Regional Transportation District will also be operating on its holiday schedule.

All state parks, county parks, campgrounds and boat ramps will remain open through the holiday.

Parades and events

A plethora of events set to celebrate veterans will be held throughout the weekend and on Monday.

The annual Denver Veterans Day Parade and Festival is set to kick off at City Park on Saturday, with the 5k and 10k runs starting at 8:30 a.m.

The parade, which stretches around the park from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., is still set to occur as of Thursday afternoon. The celebratory festival running at the park afterward until 2 p.m. is also a go — but ongoing winter weather may change or cancel the event.

“We are currently watching the weather situation,” organizers said on the event website. “Colorado weather is unpredictable and currently we are planning to move forward with our scheduled event.”

If changes are made to the long-running event, they will be announced by 2 p.m. Friday.

Colorado Air National Guard F-16 Fighting Falcons will honor our veterans with flyovers over Loveland, Longmont, Westminster and Lakewood on Monday from 11:50 a.m. to noon.

And those who want more plane action can head over to the Wings Over the Rockies Museum, which will have free admission for active military and veterans between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday.

The University of Colorado Boulder will also be holding a Veterans Day celebration at the University Memorial Center at 11 a.m. Monday.

The Rocky Mountain Brassworks band will also be holding a Veterans Day concert on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Lakewood Cultural Center. Tickets can be purchased at the cultural center’s website.
