Adams County man sentenced to life in prison after murdering girlfriend

An Adams County man will spend life in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder stemming from the 2022 murder of his girlfriend in a Commerce City motel room.

Adams County District Court Judge Brett Martin sentenced 28-year-old Angel Santana to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Thursday after he was convicted of first-degree murder. The week-long jury trial ended Nov. 25, according to a news release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The murder occurred on July 21, 2022, in a hotel room at 7330 Brighton Road in Commerce City, according to the release.

Deputies of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office were called to the hotel room and found a 30-year-old woman suffering from severe injuries to her head, face and neck.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died from multiple facial fractures, severe intercranial bleeding, traumatic stroke, brain herniation and a collapsed lung.

The victim’s boyfriend, Santana, told the deputies that he did not know what happened to her. His story continued to change throughout the evening, with Santana claiming that he blacked out and didn’t know what happened, according to the release.

Santana had injuries to his hand indicating the he had assaulted another person. He was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

“The violence the victim endured at the hands of this defendant is truly unspeakable,” District Attorney Brian Mason said in the release. “The defendant will now spend the rest of his life in prison for this terrible crime. No one should ever suffer violence from a partner or loved one. Our effort to bring a Family Justice Center to Adams and Broomfield Counties continues for victims such as the one here. I hope one day we can prevent domestic violence homicides from happening in this community at all.”
