Boulder police warn residents of jury duty scam

Do you have jury duty or not?

The Boulder Police Department warned locals of an ongoing scam regarding residents missing jury duty and having to pay a fine to avoid being arrested, according to a social media post by the department.

The scam involves calling Boulder County residents and telling them that they have a warrant out for their arrest after missing jury duty. The scammer then usually requests money via a wire transfer to “take care of” the situation, according to the post.

“Don’t fall for it,” the department said.

“We’ve taken at least three or four calls/reports this week from community members who have been scammed or almost were. The thieves posed as law enforcement on the phone and demanded money in a variety of ways, from Zelle payments to bitcoin to gift cards to Coinstar,” the department added.

Law enforcement will never contact citizens requesting payments to avoid an arrest warrant, according to the post.

If someone is summoned for jury duty, they will receive a notice in the mail around four weeks before the service date.

If someone is unsure whether they have a warrant, they can contact their local court or check on ColoradoCourtRecords.us.
