Criminal investigation ongoing into former Jeffco chief of schools
There’s little information as to why Jefferson County Public Schools abruptly fired its Chief of Schools last Thursday. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office said that David Weiss has not been arrested but that “a criminal investigation is ongoing” and “reports are not complete,” according to spokesperson Jacki Kelley.
A Jefferson County Schools spokesperson would only confirm that Weiss’ employment was terminated effective Dec. 19.
Weiss’ profile is no longer on the Jefferson County Public Schools website, the job only listed as “vacant.”
The school district told The Denver Gazette’s news partner 9NEWS that the chief of schools leads the Department of School Leadership and reports to the deputy superintendent. The position oversees increasing student achievement, quality school leadership, and school effectiveness for Jefferson County’s schools and their communities, according to the district website.
“Practically speaking, this role oversees 11 Community Superintendents who, in turn, supervise Jeffco’s school principals,” Jeffco Public Schools said in a statement. “Additionally, this role manages the Executive Director of Athletics and Activities and Director of Student Discipline.”
Weiss’ LinkedIn profile indicated that he had held the job since 2022. He was on the Jeffco STEM Advisory Committee. According to that website, Weiss worked in public education for 20 years, having held jobs as principal at Lakewood’s Westgate Elementary, as a high school principal, and as a middle school math teacher before he became Chief of Schools for Jefferson County.
Attempts to reach Weiss were unsuccessful.
