Denver Parade of Lights will affect Christkindlmarket entrances Saturday

Two Denver holiday staples will collide Saturday evening, creating for a downtown filled with winter festivities.

The 50th annual 9NEWS Parade of Lights will march through downtown Denver Saturday evening, directly affecting the entrances of the nearby Christkindlmarket — the two most popular holiday events in the city.

The Christkindlmarket, which takes place in Civic Center Park every winter, will close down its entrance on 14th Avenue and Bannock Street Saturday due to the nearby holiday parade, according to a press release from the German American Chamber of Commerce – Colorado Chapter.

The temporary entrance to the Christkindlmarket will be on the north-western side of the park, accessible from Colfax, and will only be present on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The second entrance will be on the park’s eastern side, accessible from Broadway.

With the Parade of Lights being the market’s most popular day of the year, maximum capacity rules will be enforced to ensure everyone’s safety by temporarily closing gates or instituting a “one out, one in” policy, according to the release.

Furthermore, the German American Chamber of Commerce warned visitors of extra traffic and lines at the market Saturday, with significant congestion possible. They recommended coming to the market a different day if you don’t already plan on being downtown.

RTD busses and trains will also be affected in the area.

The parade begins at 6 p.m. and will start at 14th Avenue and Bannock Street and travel through downtown along Tremont, 17th, Arapahoe, 15th and Glenarm streets.

The parade will feature more than 40 illuminated floats, displaying character balloons, marching bands and other cultural displays.
