16-year-old killed in Aurora home invasion

Aurora police are investigating a home invasion shooting that left a 16-year-old girl dead on Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting and home invasion around 6 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 10600 block of East Jewell Avenue near the Dayton Triangle neighborhood, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

A resident of the apartment called 911 to report that someone had broken into the home, the police said.

Upon arrival, responders found the teenage girl suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died, police said.

A witness who lives at the apartments told The Denver Gazette’s news partner, 9News, that the gunshots woke him, his wife and his daughter up.

“We looked out the window right away,” the witness said. “There were two males and they were just running. Another male came out and he was sad. (He said), ‘They shot my baby. They shot my baby.'”

The police had not arrested any suspect.

The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will identify the victim.

Police said there were no indications that the home invasion was gang related.
