2 mobile homes catch fire in Fort Collins

A blaze consumed two mobile homes in a Fort Collins neighborhood Wednesday evening, leading to an investigation on the cause.

Poudre Fire Authority responded to a fire in a neighborhood in the 2300 block of West County Road 38E — just east of the Horse Tooth Reservoir — around 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the fire department.

A trailer had become engulfed with flames and the fire was quickly spreading to nearby trees. Due to high winds in the area, the flames began spreading to a nearby trailer, the department said.

The fire was escalated to a two-alarm fire, meaning the department asked for additional help from other fire-fighting agencies.

Estela Esparza, a resident in the neighborhood, told The Denver Gazette that there are four homes in the cul-de-sac where the fire began. She noted that an older man was a resident of the home that first caught fire.

“I saw him outside his house when I was calling 911 and then his dog appeared from somewhere stressed out and super anxious,” she said.

Both of the homes were evacuated and a resident from the second home was evaluated for smoke inhalation by medical staff, the department said.

The fire was eventually extinguished around 11 p.m. and investigators determined that the cause of the fire was a portable heater being placed under the home in an effort to thaw pipes.
