Broncos CB Pat Surtain named PFWA NFL Defensive Player of the Year
More evidence is surfacing on Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II being the favorite for NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
On Wednesday, the Pro Football Writers of America announced that Surtain was named its Defensive Player of the Year. Voting for the award was done by members of the organization, some of whom are among the 50 voters for the official Defensive Player of the Year Award. That will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 6.
Surtain, ranked as the NFL’s No. 1 cornerback by Pro Football Focus, is the first Denver player to win the PFWA Defensive Player of the Year award, which was first instituted in 1992. The only Broncos player to have won the official Defensive Player of the Year award was linebacker Randy Gradishar in 1978.
The PFWA also announced that voters named Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson as NFL Most Valuable Player and Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley as NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
Mougey gets second interview
The Jets have requested a second interview with Darren Mougey — the Broncos’ assistant general manager — for New York’s GM vacancy, according to Wednesday media reports.
Mougey, 39, began working for the Broncos as a scouting intern in 2012. He was later hired as director of player personnel in 2021 under GM George Paton. Mougey was promoted to assistant general manager the next year.
The Jets announced on Wednesday they hired Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as head coach.
